Last year I had the privilege of photographing The Venetian Chair, at The royal Academy’s ‘Matisse in The Studio’ exhibition. This junk shop chair was the inspiration of many paintings and drawings by one of my greatest heroes. It was so poignant for me to be alone with one of the Master’s favourite props, and imagine the hours he spent staring at it. I needed to add a background, not my normal mode of working, but I hope it is discreet and fitting.
My gratitude to Ann Dumas at the Royal Academy and The Musee Matisse for allowing me this privilege.
